ROBIN: Workshop to Build Reference Networks from Hydrological Data and Develop Drought and Low-Flow Indicators

About Event:

Monday, October 06, 2025 (18:00-19:30) Timing (IST)

Data from river basins that remain relatively undisturbed by human activities are essential for detecting climate-driven hydrological trends and informing adaptation strategies. The Reference Observatory of Basins for International Hydrological Climate Change Detection (ROBIN) provides a global dataset of over 2,300 gauging stations in near-natural catchments, now openly available alongside a recent Nature Scientific Data publication.

This interactive workshop will go beyond introducing the ROBIN initiative to show how you can apply it in practice. Participants will:

  • Learn about ROBIN and reference networks – why minimally disturbed rivers are vital for understanding hydrological change and how countries are already benefiting from developing their own national networks.
  • Get hands-on experience with the ROBIN code library – bring your own data (or use example datasets) to generate drought and low-flow indicators, and explore the flowScreen package to assess hydrological trends.
  • Hear from ROBIN partners and stakeholders – discover real-world examples of how institutes in different countries are using ROBIN to build reference networks and support water management and climate resilience.
  • Engage in open discussion – contribute your perspectives on identifying suitable reference-like catchments, criteria for inclusion, and opportunities for expanding the global network.

This workshop is designed for researchers, hydrologists, data managers, and policymakers interested in leveraging hydrological data for climate adaptation and long-term water resource planning. Whether you’re seeking to join the network, locate near-natural river flow data, or apply the tools directly to your own datasets, this session will provide practical skills, inspiring case studies, and opportunities to connect with the international community driving this initiative forward.

Join us to see how your organisation or country can be part of shaping the world’s first truly global reference hydrological network.
