Life and Food at IIT Roorkee

IIT Roorkee offers a vibrant mix of academic rigor, cultural diversity, and culinary experiences.

1. Cafe Coffee Day

Situated on the ground floor of the Multi Activity Centre (MAC) the place serves as a rendezvous for various group discussions, group meetings, ‘personal’ meetings and friendly hangouts. The place attracts a handsome amount of people because of two main reasons: it's highly subsidised prices and location.

2. AROMA

AROMA Specialises in delicious FOOD featuring fresh INGREDIENTS & masterful preparation by AROMA's culinary team, whether you are ordering a multi-course meal or grabbing a beverage & pizza at the restaurant.

3. KIH Cafeteria

Cafeteria is part of the institute's Khosla International House, a guest house. The culinary team here offers you the best of Indian cuisine with occasional regional-specific delicacies. Again, it's a great place to hang out.
Or if you’re more into nibbling your way through lectures or grabbing a bite between strolls…

Maggie…. Samosa…. Bun Maska…. You name it.


4. Green Gala Café

Located near the ICED (International Centre of Excellence for Dams), the café’s got plenty of space – this café is our little Times Square.


5. DAP canteen

Department of Architecture and Planning Canteen,Located at the left corner of the building, shaded by trees, it is yet another place to munch and unwind.


6. Chai Garam

Located at the heart of the Institute alongside the Sports Complex. This is a great spot to refuel after a high-intensity workout.


7. CBRI Canteen

The Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) hosts a delightful canteen where you can enjoy some of the best parathas, patties, Maggi, and lassi. Although it is not a part of IIT, we share a very friendly relationship with the institute. There is frequent and easy interaction between our institutions.


8. Amul

Amul is a renowned Indian brand for milk products, be it their chai (milk tea), a shake, snacks or cold coffee, they tingle your tastebuds. And ice-creams there are a must-try.The place offers a comfortable seating arrangement and a nice place to lose track of time over a bite.

The institute also has three fruit and vegetable stalls, perfect for those who prefer healthy or organic options. You can find a variety of fruits here, ranging from regular to exotic fruits.

The institute also features a convenient on-campus grocery store that caters to daily needs. From essential cooking supplies to snacks and household items, it offers a practical option for students and staff who prefer shopping nearby.


Roorkee is well connected to Delhi by rail and road. It is situated on National Highways 58 and 73 and is on Amritsar-Howrah main rail route. Some trains which are convenient for travelling between Delhi and Roorkee are New Delhi-Dehradun-New Delhi Shatabdi Express and Dehradun-New Delhi-Dehradun Janshatabdi Express. The nearest airport is located at Jollygrant, Dehradun. However, New Delhi is the preferred airport. National Highway 58 from New Delhi to the higher reaches of the Himalayas passes via Roorkee. Roorkee is, therefore, well connected to all the major cities in the region by road. There are frequent bus services to this place from the Maharana Pratap Inter State Bus Terminal (Kashmere Gate) Delhi.
