The IAHS HELPING Working Group on Water & Health aims to co-create Integrated water pollution solutions to tackle the water and health nexus. In this workshop we will discuss strategies for identifying pathways to local solutions to global health risks caused by hydrological extremes and water pollution, creating a platform for sharing opportunities in the development of solution pilots and best practice guidance.
We therefore invite interdisciplinary scientists and practitioners in hydrology, environmental pollution, public health, water sanitation and hygiene (WASH), global health and policy across the Global South and North with the ambition to contribute to this workshop where we aim to synthesize local experiences and co-create best practice guidance of integrated approaches to hydrological and pollution challenges to the provision of sustainable and resilient public health solutions.
Together, we want to explore the opportunities for creating a position paper outlining the value of hydrological process knowledge for understanding, assessing and predicting global health stressors, such as the transmission of infectious (water born) diseases and hydrometeorological extremes of public health relevance (from floods and droughts to heatwaves and critical pollution events).
We furthermore aim to initiate the development of a network of “demonstrators” of water solutions that support public health challenges locally, based on comprehensive understanding of the local drivers of successful water and health solutions to public health risks in a global context, including growing ability to adapt and transform solutions to different local contexts.
