The perfect
Hospitality
"Athithi Devo Bhava"
IIT Roorkee strongly believes in the old Indian adage "Athithi Devo Bhava". We give our visitors the best facilities be it in terms of service, ambience or food. The campus has three guest houses to accommodate the guests and delegates who visit the campus. The Guest House consists of a number of units in buildings located within the Institute campus. All the rooms are furnished, most have attached facilities, and a few have kitchenettes. Effort is made to appropriately accommodate Distinguished Visitors and Visiting Academics, including visiting doctoral students in the various guest rooms. The Guest Houses have in house dining facility, which provides meals to visitors accommodated in the guest rooms. Many members of the Institute also use the Guest House during the lunch hour, and in the early evening for refreshments.
Roorkee
Roorkee, a small town in the Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, India, is renowned for its historical and academic significance. Despite its global reputation as a center for engineering and hydrological research, Roorkee retains a modest charm and is far from the bustling infrastructure of metropolitan cities. Notably, it does not have its own airport; the nearest one is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, located approximately 70 kilometers away. This makes Roorkee accessible by road or rail, with well-connected highways and railway services ensuring convenient travel.
The town is also characterized by the absence of major international hotel chains or luxury accommodations. Visitors typically stay in locally owned guesthouses, mid-range hotels, or institution-provided lodging, especially if visiting the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee). This prestigious institution, one of the oldest technical institutes in Asia, is a key attraction and a major driver of academic tourism to the area.
Roorkee’s small-town atmosphere, coupled with its colonial-era charm and serene canal-side landscapes, offers a unique appeal. However, it lacks large malls or luxury retail outlets, focusing instead on local markets and small businesses. This gives Roorkee a peaceful, laid-back vibe, making it a refreshing alternative to urban chaos. Its significance lies not in its commercialization but in its contributions to education, engineering, and historical heritage, making it a quiet yet impactful town in the cultural and academic landscape of India.
